Big Beautiful World 27 -- Chapel, Upper Level, Palace of Versailles
It’s a big, beautiful world out there. Let’s stop trying to screw it up. The Palace of Versailles is...ummm...what words can be used to adequately convey the suffocating grandeur of Versailles? Yes, suffocating. OK, let me back up a moment. Versailles is insanely gorgeous. All the stories? Everything you've heard about or seen in a movie? It doesn't quite sum up what it's like to stand in the middle of these rooms. It is no exaggeration to say that every available surface is covered in gold or marble, ornately carved, befestooned in golden garland, or covered in ostrich feathers. Which are hard to get, when you think about it; there are not a lot of ostriches running around Paris, not now, not in 1785. And while, on the one hand, it might be nice to be surrounded by every conceivable luxury, on the other...where do you go from there? Anything less than every conceivable luxury is a downgrade. It's gorgeous and should endure as a testament, but can one actually live somewhere like this without it turning into an exquisite prison? This is the upper level of the royal chapel. Yes of course. It is beautiful. I still feel the weight of it.
